Ban this, ban that

Published by marco on

Lynne Cheney, the Vice President Dick Cheney’s wife is doing her part for the war effort. The American Council of Trustees and Alumni, which she founded, has come out with a report (PDF Format) called Defending Civilization: How Our Universities Are Failing America and What Can Be Done About It, which contains over 100 quotes from university professors which are deemed unpatriotic. There’s an article called Conservatives Denounce Dissent at Common Dreams and a discussion at Plastic (once again, use a filter of 3 for best results).

Clear Channel, the mothership of American radio stations, has issued a ban list of songs that they recommend no longer be played, since they are ‘lyrically questionable’. Most of the banned songs are obviously banned for the title only, like ‘Fire Woman’ by the Cult (mental image of people on fire?), or ‘Jump’ by Van Halen (mental image of people jumping?).

These are not good trends. Our government wishes anyone who doesn’t agree with its policies would just shut up. So far, that’s all they’re doing. With the definition of terrorism still extremely vague and sedition laws ‘technically’ still on the books, they could do more. Hold on for a bumpy ride, I think.
