"Pretending to be crazy works really well until you run into someone pretending
to be sane."

In searching for the quote, I found this one in the comments,

"When dealing with the insane, the best method is to pretend to be sane"

It's nice but it doesn't actually mean the same thing.

Another comment claimed it was Mitch Hedberg but I can't corroborate that at
all. He's one of the most quotable comics of all time and I didn't find that
quote anywhere else. It sounds good, though.

"Mitch Hedberg who said if someone says, "Don't mess with me, I'm crazy!",
that's not actually intimidating. If someone says, "Don't mess with me, I'm a
refrigerator!", you stay away from that guy."

As usual, mentioning Mitch Hedberg in the Reddit comments triggered an avalanche
of quotations and sentiments expressed in his voice. They're like zen koans.

For example,

[Things I used to do]

"I used to love Mitch Hedberg quotes. I still do, but I used to, too."

"I used to love Mitch Hedberg. I still do, but I used to, too. ❤"

These two are homages to Hedberg's "now-ominous-sounding"
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_Hedberg#Death> joke,

"I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too."

[Girlfriends]

"I don’t have a girlfriend but I know a girl who would be really mad if she
heard me say that."

[Baked potatoes]

"I like baked potatoes. I don't have a microwave oven, and it takes forever to
bake a potato in a conventional oven. Sometimes I'll just throw one in there,
even if I don't want one, because by the time it's done, who knows?"

[Slip covers]

"This one commercial said "Forget everything you know about slip covers," so I
did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell slip
covers, but I didn't know what the fuck they were."

[Laziness]

"I write jokes for a living, man. See I sit in my hotel at night, I think of
something that's funny and then I go get a pen and I write it down. Or, if the
pen's too far away, I have to convince myself that what I thought of ain't
funny."

[Bananas]

"My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana, and I said "No... but I want a
regular banana later, so yeah.""

[Escalators]

"I like escalators, because an escalator can never break; it can only become
stairs."

That's "graceful degradation" <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fault_tolerance>
for you.

"To think ill of mankind, and not wish ill to them, is perhaps the highest
wisdom and virtue."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had a lovely discussion with a dear Slovakian friend just this past weekend.
We agreed that we seem to think well of individuals but that people in groups
are nearly always detestable and that mankind is doomed.

We further agreed that, although we are very likely unwittingly sometimes part
of the problem, there is nevertheless nothing for it but to continue to try to
drag each and every one of us, kicking and screaming, into what we consider to
be the light.

I only learned today that, at least according to William Hazlitt, this makes us
not only wise, but virtuous.

"“The Law of Implicit Interfaces”: Given enough use, there is no such thing
as a private implementation. That is, if an interface has enough consumers, they
will collectively depend on every aspect of the implementation, intentionally or
not. This effect serves to constrain changes to the implementation, which must
now conform to both the explicitly documented interface, as well as the implicit
interface captured by usage. We often refer to this phenomenon as "bug-for-bug
compatibility.""

"For example, an interface may make no guarantees about performance, yet
consumers often come to expect a certain level of performance from its
implementation. Those expectations become part of the implicit interface to a
system, and changes to the system must maintain these performance
characteristics to continue functioning for its consumers."

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be
in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the
law binds but does not protect."

We have chosen this because we all think we're in the in-group, or that we will
soon be in the in-group. We do not care about the out-group because we all
egotistically and absolutely immorally believe that we are only "temporarily
embarrassed" out-groupers (to steal part of a quote from John Steinbeck [1]).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] The quote is here, but it's disputed and seems to have been a paraphrase of
a very similar phrase from an article.
"Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as
an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires."

From "Roaming Charges: Sturm und Drang Warnings" by Jeffrey St. Clair
<https://www.counterpunch.org/2025/05/16/sturm-und-drang-warnings/>, where it
was described as "We’ll probably never hear another president speak as

That's probably true. People don't talk like this anymore in the U.S. Other

From "Pomp and Circumstance" by Corey Robin
<https://coreyrobin.com/2025/05/15/pomp-and-circumstance/>, a short article
about NYU's craven response to "NYU student denounced Israel’s genocide in
Gaza during his graduation speech to roaring applause."
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI3SnsfZChQ>

"Try to imagine at least once a day that you are not an American. Go even
further: try to imagine at least once a day that you belong to the vast, the
overwhelming majority of people on this planet who don’t have passports,
don’t live in dwellings equipped with both refrigerators and telephones, who
have never even once flown in a plane."

It also included this brilliant quote of Salman Rushdie,

"Since I have come to believe that such defiance is an inevitable and essential
aspect of what we call freedom, I thought I might commend it to you. For in the
years to come you will find yourselves up against gods of all sorts, big and
little gods, corporate and incorporeal gods, all of them demanding to be
worshipped and obeyed – the myriad deities of money and power, of convention
and custom, that will seek to limit and control your thoughts and lives.

"Defy them; that’s my advice to you. Thumb your noses; cock your snooks. For,
as the myths tell us, it is by defying the gods that human beings have best
expressed their humanity."

[image]As Robin writes, this is not how the elites act.

"what do the leaders of NYU do? Freak out about this student, their commencement
speaker, who had the audacity to refer to “the atrocities currently happening
in Palestine,” and, so, naturally, is having his diploma revoked.

grouping them so that when the reader closes his eyes he gets a picture. For
instance, you’ll have a moonlit night if you write that on the mill dam a
piece of glass from a broken bottle glittered like a bright little star, and
that the black shadow of a dog or a wolf rolled past like a ball.”"

"[image]I'll tell you what's at the bottom of it. If you can convince the lowest
white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking
his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets
for you."

According to the article "Did Lyndon B. Johnson Say This About The 'Lowest White
Man' and 'Best Colored Man'?" by David Emery
<https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/lbj-convince-the-lowest-white-man/>, it was a
then-young Bill Moyers himself to whom Johnson said this, presumably in the 60s.
Moyers quotes him as having said it in response to " some ugly racial epithets
scrawled on signs [he's spotted during the motorcade.]" So, it seems that he was
not describing a recipe he'd planned on using, but simply the power of the idea
of racism.

The article states further,

"One of the secrets of his success was the ability to speak the racially
insensitive language of his fellow Southerners. He understood them. He
understood their reluctance and in some cases downright refusal to tear down the
walls of racial segregation. He knew racism from the inside, and he knew well
the role the rich and powerful played in promulgating it."

To balance this just a bit, I also found this other quote from good ol' boy
Lyndon B. Johnson,

"I'll have those n**gers voting Democratic for the next 200 years."

This is the same man who turned up the heat on the Vietnam War to the
temperature that would end up cooking at least two million Vietnamese, whom he
considered to be "hordes of barbaric yellow dwarves".

"Ayn Rand’s ‘philosophy’ is nearly perfect in its immorality, which makes
the size of her audience all the more ominous and symptomatic as we enter a
curious new phase in our society. Moral values are in flux. The muddy depths are
being stirred by new monsters and witches from the deep. Trolls walk the
American night. Caesars are stirring in the Forum. There are storm warnings
ahead. [1]"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] Bonus Gore Vidal on Ayn Rand (from the attached image):
"[Ayn Rand] has a great attraction for simple people who are puzzled by
organized society, who object to paying taxes, who dislike the 'welfare'
state, who feel guilt at the thought of the suffering of others but who would
like to harden their hearts. For them. she has an enticing prescription:
altruism is the root of all evil, self-interest is the only good, and if
you're dumb or incompetent that's your lookout."

Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to
die."

The Wikipedia article describes the origin of these few, sparse lines.

"[...] the original script, before Hauer's rewrite, was:"

"I've seen things... seen things you little people wouldn't believe. Attack
ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion bright as magnesium... I rode on the
back decks of a blinker and watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the
Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments... they'll be gone."

"Hauer described this as "opera talk" and "hi-tech speech" with no bearing on
the rest of the film, so he "put a knife in it" the night before filming,
without Scott's knowledge.[11] After filming the scene with Hauer's version,
crew-members applauded, with some even in tears.[6] In an interview with Dan
Jolin, Hauer said that these final lines showed that Batty wanted to "make his
mark on existence ... the replicant in the final scene, by dying, shows Deckard
what a real man is made of"."

Rutger Hauer was right. His version is indisputably better. It's one of my
favorite scenes. Combined with the fruits of a lifetime of consuming science
fiction, the few lines evoke entire swaths of history, the immense breadth of a
system-girdling human empire. They never fail to give me chills, to give me hope
that we are capable of making beautiful and meaningful things.

about history, however, is that so much in it escapes language, escapes

"Poor human nature, what horrible crimes have been committed in thy name!

"Every fool, from king to policeman, from the flatheaded parson to the
visionless dabbler in science, presumes to speak authoritatively of human
nature. The greater the mental charlatan, the more definite his insistence on
the wickedness and weaknesses of human nature.

"Yet, how can any one speak of it today, with every soul in a prison, with every
heart fettered, wounded, and maimed? John Burroughs has stated that experimental
study of animals in captivity is absolutely useless. Their character, their
habits, their appetites undergo a complete transformation when torn from their
soil in field and forest.

"With human nature caged in a narrow space, whipped daily into submission, how
can we speak of its potentialities?"

Capitalism voids any conclusions we could make about human nature because it
sullies the data.

"Once war was considered the business of soldiers, international relations the
concern of diplomats. But now that war has become seemingly total and seemingly
permanent, the free sport of kings has become the forced and internecine
business of people, and diplomatic codes of honor between nations have
collapsed.

"Peace in no longer serious; only war is serious. Every man and every nation is
either friend or foe, and the idea of enmity becomes mechanical, massive, and
without genuine passion.

"When virtually all negotiation aimed at peaceful agreement is likely to be seen
as ‘appeasement,’ if not treason, the active role of the diplomat becomes
meaningless; for diplomacy becomes merely a prelude to war an interlude between
wars, and in such a context the diplomat is replaced by the warlord."

"My guess is that the indignities imposed on so many low-wage workers—the drug
tests, the constant surveillance, being “reamed out” by managers—are part
of what keeps wages low. If you’re made to feel unworthy enough, you may come
to think that what you’re paid is what you are actually worth. It is hard to
imagine any other function for workplace authoritarianism. Managers may truly
believe that, without their unremitting efforts, all work would quickly grind to
a halt. That is not my impression. While I encountered some cynics and plenty of
people who had learned to budget their energy, I never met an actual slacker or,
for that matter, a drug addict or thief. On the contrary, I was amazed and
sometimes saddened by the pride people took in jobs that rewarded them so
meagerly, either in wages or in recognition. Often, in fact, these people
experienced management as an obstacle to getting the job done as it should be
done."

Her heart's in the right place -- and she's mostly right. I know many people who
fit her description: living lives of quiet desperation and trying to do what
they think is the right thing, no matter how impossible the task appears.
However, drug addicts and slackers and thieves do exist, even among the poor.
While we absolutely should not consign the poor as a group to the dustbin of
history, we don't need to do the poor the disservice of romanticizing them,
either. We should just treat them as individuals, each as fallible or as capable
of dignity and honor as anyone else. Perhaps more so than the rich who denigrate
them without cause, but also not each and every one angelic.

Overheard in the excellent video essay,

[media]

At 21:30,

"The point is to reflect on the way we generally regard the cosmos and the
fundamental forces that are at play there. And to question that, which we so
often deem to be the realistic or the rational view of our universe. Because
when the void at the end of all things is no longer a given, when the nature of
our cosmos is vastly more complicated than we assumed, the supposedly objective
view that drives so much of our nihilism becomes a rather fatalistic submission
to our own limited perceptions, our own misguided judgments, and perhaps even to
our own arrogance, the hubris of believing that we were capable enough of
definitively judging the fundamental nature of our reality."

At 23:00,

"Ulrich Beck once wrote that we live in languages, that it's the community
spirit, the sense of togetherness, for which, through shared symbols and
meanings, that ultimately allows individuals to navigate their lives."

the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome

The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive

presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of
celebration of ignorance."

"The greatest barrier to communication is the illusion of it in the mind of the
sender."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This quote has quote a storied history, as documented in "The Biggest Problem in
Communication Is the Illusion That It Has Taken Place"
<https://quoteinvestigator.com/2014/08/31/illusion/>. Alternatives are,

"The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken
place."

"The greatest problem with communication is the illusion that it has been
accomplished."

"The most serious danger in communication is the illusion of having achieved
it."

"The great enemy of communication is the illusion of it."

I like what the quote investigator determined to be the original version.

What do we do when everyone's consuming content and no-one's producing it? The
quality drops precipitously.

"It is only through difference that progress can be made. What threatens us
right now is probably what we may call over-communication–that is, the
tendency to know exactly in one point of the world what is going on in all other
parts of the world. In order for a culture to be really itself and to produce
something, the culture and its members must be convinced of their originality
and even, to some extent, of their superiority over the others; it is only under
conditions of under-communication that it can produce anything. We are now
threatened with the prospect of our being only consumers, able to consume
anything from any point in the world and from any culture, but of losing all
originality."

"Kill one man, and you are a murderer.
Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror.
Kill them all, and you are a god."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I actually heard this quote initially as "Kill one man, and you're a murderer;
kill them all, and. you. are. a. god.", delivered from the maw of "featuring
ludacris", Jay Balzarian's dog on the TV Show Big Mouth. It was in S05E08, which
was a Christmas show and the dog was playing a John Wick character and had just
finished eliminating an entire Russian gang, triumphing at the end with the help
of Santa Claus, who is martyred. The show was trying a bit too hard, but I liked
the quote...and the dog delivered is stone-cold.

In looking for the quote, I also found that it's in the song "Captive Honour" by
Megadeth <https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/megadeth/captivehonour.html>. But the
first time I heard something similar was on the "Dress to Kill comedy album" by
Eddie Izzard <https://genius.com/Eddie-izzard-dress-to-kill-annotated>, where he
did the following bit,

"You know, we think if somebody kills someone, that's murder, you go to prison.

"You kill 10 people, you go to Texas, they hit you with a brick, that's what
they do.

"20 people, you go to a hospital, they look through a small window at you
forever.

"And over that, we can't deal with it, you know? Someone's killed 100,000
people, we're almost going, "Well done! You killed 100,000 people? You must get
up very early in the morning. I can't even get down the gym!"

quality in this world that is not what it is merely by contrast. Nothing exists
in itself. If you flatter yourself that you are all over comfortable, and have
been so a long time, then you cannot be said to be comfortable any more. For
this reason a sleeping apartment should never be furnished with a fire, which is
one of the luxurious discomforts of the rich. For the height of this sort of
deliciousness is to have nothing but the blanket between you and your snugness
and the cold of the outer air. Then there you lie like the one warm spark in the

retribution, thus maintaining the endless cycle of violence in our culture. It

greed–which are at the root of most punished crime. The crimes of the rich and

The article ""That's Why It's Poetry"" by Eugene Volokh
<https://reason.com/volokh/2021/02/23/thats-why-its-poetry/> commemorates the
recent death of Lawrence Ferlinghetti with a wonderful story, not directly about
Ferlinghetti, but about one expert witness's testimony at his trial for
obscenity for having published Howl. It wasn't so long ago in America that
people were being prosecuted for obscenity.

That trial was in 1957. Just over 60 years later and it seems kind of
far-fetched to think we may see the like again. The goal is to sanction
unsanctioned [1] ideas, to keep them from polluting people's minds, distracting
them from the self-evident and officially accepted truth. Why bother with a
trial and its messy rules of evidence -- why risk a public and official and
potentially ideologically damaging loss -- when you can try and pillory heretics
on social or the mainstream media or both?

"Among other things, Ferlinghetti published Allen Ginsberg's Howl, and was
prosecuted for obscenity because of that. One particular passage from that trial
sticks in my head, as reported in Edward de Grazia, Girls Lean Back Everywhere
335-36 (1992); the colloquy was with an expert witness, literary critic Mark
Schorer, who was testifying to the poem having ""redeeming social importance"

"Prosecutor: I presume you understand the whole thing, is that right?:

"Schorer: I hope so. It's not always easy to know that one understands exactly
what a contemporary poet is saying….

"Prosecutor: Do you understand what "angel-headed hipsters burning for the
ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night"
means?

"Schorer: Sir, you can't translate poetry into prose. That's why it's poetry.
(Emphasis added.)"

Wonderful.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] I thought it would be fun to use the diametrically opposed definitions right
next to each other. It was.

philosophical eye than the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,
and the implicit submission with which men resign their own sentiments and
passions to those of their rulers. When we enquire by what means this wonder is
effected, we shall find, that, as force is always on the side of the governed,
the governors have nothing to support them but opinion. It is therefore, on
opinion only that government is founded, and this maxim extends to the most
despotic and most military governments, as well as to the most free and most
popular. The soldan of Egypt, or the emperor of Rome, might drive his harmless
subjects, like brute beasts, against their sentiments and inclination. But he
must at least have led his mamalukes, or prætorian bands, like men, by their
opinion."

who is purported to have said them.

"Diplomacy is the art of building ladders to allow people to climb down

"Diplomacy is the art of telling someone to go to hell in such a manner that
they look forward to the trip."

The post "Two centuries and nothing has changed"
<https://old.reddit.com/r/ABoringDystopia/comments/gadhcx/two_centuries_and_nothing_has_changed/>
referred to the image below,

It's nicely put together, but it's also not the original quote, which someone
included in the comments in a giant wall of text from an English translation.

I found the "original in German"
<https://content.csbs.utah.edu/~ehrbar/cap1.pdf>:

"Die kapitalistische Produktion entwickelt daher nur die Technik und Kombination
des gesellschaftlichen Produktionsprozesses, indem sie zugleich die
Springquellen alles Reichtums untergräbt: die Erde und den Arbeiter."

The translation on the Reddit link is:

"Capitalist production, therefore, develops technology, and the combining
together of various processes into a social whole, only by sapping the original
sources of all wealth—the soil and the laborer."

The side-by-side English translation from the link to the original is:

"Capitalist production, therefore, only develops the techniques and the degree
of combination of the social process of production by simultaneously undermining
the original sources of all wealth – the soil and the worker."

I think a combination of the two would be more correct. The first one places the
"only" in the wrong place whereas the second one invents "degree of" out of
whole cloth.

After that preamble, here's my translation:

"The capitalist product therefore develops only the techniques and combination
of social processes of production by undermining the two geysers of all wealth:
the soil and the worker."

As with "the Hegel quote going around"
<https://www.earthli.com/news/view_article.php?id=3935>, it's not as sexy as the
re-imagining in the poster.

The original quote is shown below.

"Was die Erfahrung aber und die Geschichte lehren, ist dieses, dass Völker und
Regierungen niemals etwas aus der Geschichte gelernt und nach Lehren, die aus
derselben zu ziehen gewesen wären, gehandelt haben."

The following is my best attempt at a direct translation, which I hope imparts
just how balky the original is.

"But what experience and history have taught, is that society and governments
never learn anything from history and acted on lessons from which the same could
have been learned."

This is how the quote is commonly cited in English:

"The only thing we can learn from history is that we learn nothing from
history."

Which, I think we can all agree, is much snappier.

I found this quote in the tooltip of "XKCD #2101" <https://xkcd.com/2101/> [1].

"I [suspect] that we are throwing more and more of our resources, including the
cream of our youth, into financial activities remote from the production of
goods and services, into activities that generate high private rewards
disproportionate to their social productivity. I suspect that the immense power
of the computer is being harnessed to this 'paper economy', not to do the same
transactions more economically but to balloon the quantity and variety of
financial exchanges."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] The quote seems to be quite real. I did a bit of digging and came up with
the original paper (scanned, JPG), called "On the Efficiency of the
    Financial System"
    <https://economicsociologydotorg.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/tobin-on-the-efficiency-of-the-financial-system.pdf>

human society. It cannot be overemphasized that in a small community, everyone
normally was both a lender and borrower. One can only imagine the tensions and
temptations that must have existed in a community—and communities, much though
they are based on love, in fact because they are based on love, will always also
be full of hatred, rivalry and passion—when it became clear that with
sufficiently clever scheming, manipulation, and perhaps a bit of strategic
bribery, they could arrange to have almost anyone they hated imprisoned or even
hanged. (Emphasis added.)"

"What makes it possible for a totalitarian or any other dictatorship to rule is
that people are not informed; how can you have an opinion if you are not

"If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the
lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer. This is because lies,
by their very nature, have to be changed, and a lying government has constantly
to rewrite its own history.

"On the receiving end, you get not only one lie—a lie which you could go on
for the rest of your days—but you get a great number of lies, depending on how
the political wind blows.

"And a people that no longer can believe anything cannot make up its mind. It is
deprived not only of its capacity to act but also of its capacity to think and
to judge.

"And with such a people you can then do what you please."

"If a white man wants to lynch me, that's his problem. If he's got the power to
lynch me, that's my problem. Racism is not a question of attitude; it's a
question of power. Racism gets its power from capitalism. Thus, if you're
anti-racist, whether you know it or not, you must be anti-capitalist. The power
for racism, the power for sexism, comes from capitalism, not an attitude."

believes that these things can every one of them, in all their tones and

arbitrary system of grunts and squeals. He believes that an ordinary civilized

"America is the wealthiest nation on Earth, but its people are mainly poor, and
poor Americans are urged to hate themselves. To quote the American humorist Kin
Hubbard, 'It ain’t no disgrace to be poor, but it might as well be.' It is in
fact a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of
poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely
wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold.
No such tales are told by the American poor. They mock themselves and glorify
their betters. The meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who
is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel
question: 'if you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?'

"[...]

"Americans, like human beings everywhere, believe many things that are obviously
untrue. Their most destructive untruth is that it is very easy for any American
to make money. They will not acknowledge how in fact hard money is to come by,
and, therefore, those who have no money blame and blame and blame themselves.
This inward blame has been a treasure for the rich and powerful, who have had to
do less for their poor, publicly and privately, than any other ruling class
since, say Napoleonic times.

"Many novelties have come from America. The most startling of these, a thing
without precedent, is a mass of undignified poor. They do not love one another
because they do not love themselves."

Inspiring eyes-open cynicism (it's just a ride)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just recently came across this bit by Bill Hicks [1] again. It illuminates
what for me makes a good comic. Observational humor is only the very beginning.
What makes a comedian memorable for me -- what puts him or her on my all-time
best list -- is a mixture of good storytelling and philosophy as well as a
cynical awareness of the utter nonsense that is the human condition. If you mix
that with an ability to deliver hope from the depths of eyes-open cynical
awareness, then you've got gold. A pity he was cut down so soon. [2]

[media]

"The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it
you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up
and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly
colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Many people have been on
the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this
just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and
say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." And
we … kill those people. "Shut him up! I've got a lot invested in this ride,
shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry, look at my big bank account, and my
family. This has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill the good guys
who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok …
But it doesn't matter, because it's just a ride. And we can change it any time
we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money.
Just a simple choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want
you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of
love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world,
right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and
defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the
poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being
excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever,
in peace. (Emphasis in original.)"

It's just a ride. There are proponents everywhere. I remember when I was in High
School, my Earth-science teacher, who assigned more reading in one week than a
college course had in a semester, who drove her Volkswagen minivan named Beulah
all over the country in the summer to sew leather at motorcycle conventions,
wore a T-shirt on one of our innumerable field trips -- we blew through the
budget in no time, but she didn't care, there was so much to see -- with the
words Non Illegitimi Carborundum, which she proudly and with a grin told us when
we, of course, asked, meant "don't let the bastards get you down". I wonder now
whether she listened to Bill Hicks too.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] It's included at the end of Zeitgeist, but that's neither here nor there.

[1] Bill Hicks was cut down in his mid-30s by pancreatic cancer. I imagine he
would have characterized it as having gotten out early enough before he
    ruined everything by selling out.

"Oh, dear me, how unspeakably funny and owlishly idiotic and grotesque was that
‘plagiarism’ farce! As if there was much of anything in any human utterance,
oral or written, except plagiarism! The kernel, the soul—let us go further and
say the substance, the bulk, the actual and valuable material of all human
utterances—is plagiarism. For substantially all ideas are second-hand,
consciously and unconsciously drawn from a million outside sources, and daily
used by the garnerer with a pride and satisfaction born of the superstition that
he originated them; whereas there is not a rag of originality about them
anywhere except the little discoloration they get from his mental and moral
calibre and his temperament, and which is revealed in characteristics of
phrasing. When a great orator makes a great speech you are listening to ten
centuries and ten thousand men—but we call it his speech, and really some
exceedingly small portion of it is his. But not enough to signify. It is merely
a Waterloo. It is Wellington’s battle, in some degree, and we call it his; but
there are others that contributed. It takes a thousand men to invent a
telegraph, or a steam engine, or a phonograph, or a telephone or any other
important thing—and the last man gets the credit and we forget the others. He
added his little mite—that is all he did. These object lessons should teach us
that ninety-nine parts of all things that proceed from the intellect are
plagiarisms, pure and simple; and the lesson ought to make us modest. But
nothing can do that. (Emphasis added.)"

interesting words in the wizard's mouth that explains his role quite well. After
Dorothy and Co. have revealed him to be a fraud -- a mere man rather than the
all-powerful wizard they'd imagined him to be -- he says,

"[...] Now then, you can either persist in your dull revelation, or you can
close the curtain and return to your world where good and power can allow
without wicked dross, and where the broken vessels of your lives can be made
whole by the caprice of an inscrutable demigod."

I think it's safe to say that not many of us persist in the dull revelation.

"We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals…
We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having
taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err… They
are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with
ourselves within the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and
travail of the earth."

Published by marco on 29. Jun 2013 12:13:06

I found the following analogies, offered in response to the U.S. Supreme Court
striking down the preclearance clause of the Civil Rights Act -- the stipulation
that certain U.S. states with a long history of discriminatory voting practice
have to "pre-clear" changes to voting law with the Federal government --
entirely apropos.

"Throwing out preclearance when it has worked and is continuing to work to stop
discriminatory changes is like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm
because you are not getting wet."

"The riverbed is dry; now we can tear down the dam."

Defending federalism and states' rights is commendable and a strong priority.
This goal cannot, however, trump all other considerations. The Supreme Court's
decision is tantamount to defending a state's right to restrict civil rights in
a discriminatory fashion -- letting what has historically been called Jim Crow
laws back out of the bottle.

To offer another analogy, the preclearance states were sentenced for bad
behavior, restricting voting rights based on race. This sentence has been
commuted by the Supreme Court, releasing the States early for "good behavior",
as it were. This, despite there being neither current good behavior nor the
promise of such on the part of the affected States.

"No man demands what he desires; each man demands what he fancies he can get.
Soon people forget what the man really wanted first; and after a successful and
vigorous political life, he forgets it himself. The whole is an extravagant riot
of second bests, a pandemonium of pis-aller. Now this sort of pliability does
not merely prevent any heroic consistency, it also prevents any really practical
compromise. One can only find the middle distance between two points if the two
points will stand still. We may make an arrangement between two litigants who
cannot both get what they want; but not if they will not even tell us what they
want."

Cornell West once again distinguished himself with insightful and unrelenting
but respectful questioning, taking Rivlin to task for pleading for the status
quo. She took offense when he said that her lofty but toothless rhetoric would
lead nowhere but a shrug of the shoulders as it once again failed to have the
espoused effect. She claimed that the poor were well-represented -- and
intimated that their representation was as successful as that of the rich. West
could not let that pass without diplomatically and eloquently riposting that her
statement was empirically false and she was, at best, naively hopeful and, at
worst, deliberately mendacious for making it.

No shit. Because I’m trippin’ out, man. Here you are surrounded by those you
know well. And here I am, fish outta water struggling to breathe. Tell you
what…you be funny now. I’ll be quiet. A quiet guy is not necessarily
unfunny. Think of Charlie Chaplin. The space shuttle soars through space. But
most of the time it’s parked. Maybe on a launch pad. It is still the space
shuttle. You can’t dis it because it’s resting. I’m on my launch pad. Soon
the countdown will begin.

"I love funny people. I was funny in social situations. Still am. But when I
turned that into my job, I eased off it in everyday situations. Tonight I’ll
go onstage and make people laugh for 45 minutes. And I bet the funniest person
you know, if you added up the amount of time in one day that they had people
cracking up still wouldn’t add up to 45 minutes. “He doesn’t seem
funny.” Fuck off."

They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere

"There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you
so sick at heart—that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part.
And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the
levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got
to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it that unless
you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all."

This was 45 years ago and the wheel of history has come around again. There
doesn't seem to be any other way, really. Cited at the end of the recent
announcement by Anonymous calling for Berbanke's resignation. While the demand
is either silly or purely symbolic, the problem is very real.

"Today, words like ‘Progress’ and ‘Development’ have become
interchangeable with economic ‘Reforms’, Deregulation and Privatisation.
‘Freedom’ has come to mean ‘choice’. It has less to do with the human
spirit than with different brands of deodorant. ‘Market’ no longer means a
place where you go to buy provisions. The ‘Market’ is a de-territorialised
space where faceless corporations do business, including buying and selling
‘futures’. [...] This theft of language, this technique of usurping words
and deploying them like weapons, of using them to mask intent and to mean
exactly the opposite of what they have traditionally meant, has been one of the
most brilliant strategic victories of the Tsars of the new dispensation. It has
allowed them to marginalise their detractors, deprive them of a language in
which to voice their critique and dismiss them as being ‘anti-progress’,
‘anti-development’, ‘anti-reform’ and of course
‘anti-national’—negativists of the worst sort. Talk about saving a river
or protecting a forest and they say, ‘Don’t you believe in Progress?’ To
people whose land is being submerged by dam reservoirs and whose homes are being
bulldozed they say, ‘Do you have an alternative development model?’ To those
who believe that a government is duty-bound to provide people with basic
education, healthcare and social security, they say, ‘You’re against the
Market.’ And who except a cretin could be against the Market?

"To reclaim these stolen words requires explanations that are too tedious for a
world with a short attention span, and too expensive in an era when Free Speech
has become unaffordable for the poor. This language heist may prove to be the
keystone of our undoing."

Revenge-Taking Through Murder

Published by marco on 15. Dec 2009 22:57:54
------------------------------------------------------------------------

"But what this scene, and much else that I saw in Germany, brought home to me
was that the whole idea of revenge and punishment is a childish daydream.
Properly speaking, there is no such thing as revenge. Revenge is an act which
you want to commit when you are powerless and because you are powerless: as soon
as the sense of impotence is removed, the desire evaporates also."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The citation above was linked into a discussion on "Reddit" <http://reddit.com/>
about the death penalty. At a guess, 90% of the participants were in favor of
killing for revenge or as punishment or to "serve as a lesson to others."
Orwell's take on it -- having been up close and personal with revenge for the
most heinous of acts -- is that it is much easier to see enemies as almost
supernaturally powerful monsters capable of near-superhuman feats of evil in the
abstract; up close and stripped of power, their base [1] humanity (and, in one
case, clear mental illness) are overpoweringly evident. James-Bond-villain-like
evil is mostly confined to stories and fantasy. That is not to say that evil
does not exist or is not done -- quite the contrary -- but that the demonic
intent ascribed to the perpetrators of such acts is, in almost all cases, absent
and the cause is much more banal and, ultimately, less reassuring. If great evil
is perpetrated for mundane reasons, it's all the more offensive; dressing it up
in fantasy, however, does no-one any good, least of all a society's ethos.

The entire essay is well worth a read (and is also quite short).

A more recent example in the U.S. (but also elsewhere) is the incredible
prevarication about the myth of Al Qaeda, where it is more reassuring to believe
that "they" -- those heinous murderers -- are intent on destroying our entire
civilization rather than that they are scattered, partially religiously
brainwashed individuals with nothing left to live for except delusions of
religious reward. Though the theory that acts ascribed to "Al Qaeda" are
actually the work of desperate individuals or groups with very specific
grievances is much more logical and actually borne out by evidence. However,
those that lose loved ones to senseless acts of violence are easily susceptible
to stories expanding their loved one's death as a part in a larger epic in which
civilization hangs in the balance.

No-one wants to lose anyone for some stupid reason and, yet, most such deaths
are for stupid reasons. When a man loses an entire family in a bombing --
carried out inaccurately and acting on faulty information, but done anyway for
bureaucratic or political reasons (stupid, stupid, stupid) -- he seeks revenge,
but that is stupid as well. When that man takes several others with him in his
self-immolation, the revenge exacted by the military or state on his countryman
only multiplies the senselessness to ludicrous proportions.

Can the individual be more easily excused for his act because of his desperate
straits? Because he has nothing left to live for? Or what of the functionary
simply doing his or her job, a cog in the works, and carrying out a small step
in the procession that leads to a bombing run? Who is more to blame? Who is
truly, humanly aware of the suffering being perpetrated? It can best be argued
that those at the top, those in charge of enacting state terror are the most to
blame. Though they too are abstracted far away from the consequences of their
actions, it is their callousness and selfishness that catalyzes the cycle of
violence. For they exact violence with a purpose: To take, to control, to win
what belongs to someone else. But here we return to the question of evil; are
those at the top evil because they make deals in which they and their friends
profit but millions die? Confronted with such a pathetic monster in person --
take a Rumsfeld, for example -- one would see only a babbling old man.

It is predominantly the innocent, the uninvolved and the helpless that suffer
for all of these stupid acts. The cycle of revenge-taking does not end until one
side acts on the realization of its futility. The only way to end it is to
relieve desperation in the poor -- leave them and their resources in peace or,
at the very least, recompense them fairly -- and, at the other end, to stop
those in power from casually starting these fires of revenge simply for personal
gain. We as a society tend to vastly underestimate the cost in terms of lives
and wealth incurred by such actions.

How often is a representative corrupted for what amounts to a pittance in order
to allow something to happen that will cost billions? The representative gets a
kickback (perhaps) or gets more jobs in his or her district and gets re-elected
so that they can get more graft. The jobs are to build military equipment, which
must be used somewhere, so that representative votes for war. The war costs us
all hundreds of billions of dollars, millions of lives and untold lost
opportunity costs, all so that the representative has a second home and a fat
pension. The societal desire for revenge is so easily manipulated to support
this system for, were society less thirsty for revenge for slights -- both real
and perceived -- it would be much harder to get re-elected when one wages war.

[1] The word "base" here is used in the sense of lowest and meanest.

"Now in a different world, at a different time, and with a different president,
we face the prospect of enlarging a different war. But once again we're fighting
in remote provinces against an enemy who can bleed us slowly and wait us out,
because he will still be there when we are gone.

"Once again, we are caught between warring factions in a country where other
foreign powers fail before us. Once again, every setback brings a call for more
troops, although no one can say how long they will be there or what it means to
win. Once again, the government we are trying to help is hopelessly corrupt and
incompetent.

"And once again, a President pushing for critical change at home is being
pressured to stop dithering, be tough, show he's got the guts, by sending young
people seven thousand miles from home to fight and die, while their own country
is coming apart.

"And once again, the loudest case for enlarging the war is being made by those
who will not have to fight it, who will be safely in their beds while the war
grinds on. And once again, a small circle of advisers debates the course of
action, but one man will make the decision.

"We will never know what would have happened if Lyndon Johnson had said no to
more war. We know what happened because he said yes."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The citation is from the coda after the transcript of an interview with Lyndon
Johnson. The parallels between Vietnam in the 60's and Afghanistan in the late
00's are, frankly, sickening. What a futile waste of lives, money, effort and
energy.

done through the established system is legal, and that word has a powerful
psychological impact. It makes people believe that there is an order to life and
an order to a system and that a person that goes through this order and is
convicted has gotten all that is due him, and therefore society can turn its
conscience off and look to other things and other times. And that’s the
terrible thing about these past trials, is that they have this aura of
legitimacy, this aura of legality. I suspect that better men than the world has

"'Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all
doubt. [1]"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] Update 2026-03-29: I'd originally attributed this quote to Abraham Lincoln,
but the article "Quote Origin: Better to Remain Silent and Be Thought a Fool
than to Speak and Remove All Doubt"
    <https://quoteinvestigator.com/2010/05/17/remain-silent/> writes,
"The earliest known appearance of the adage discovered by QI occurred in a
book titled “Mrs. Goose, Her Book” by Maurice Switzer. The publication
date was 1907 and the copyright notice was 1906. The book was primarily
filled with clever nonsense verse, and the phrasing in this early version was
   slightly different:5

"It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool, than to
talk and remove all doubt of it.

"Most of the humorous content of “Mrs. Goose, Her Book” has the imprint
of originality, and based on currently available data QI believes that
Maurice Switzer is the leading candidate for originator of the expression."

"A host of unemployed citizens face the grim problem of existence, and an
equally great number toil with little return. Only a foolish optimist can deny
the dark realities of the moment.

"Yet our distress comes from no failure of substance. We are stricken by no
plague of locusts….Nature still offers her bounty and human efforts have
multiplied it. Plenty is at our doorstep, but a generous use of it languishes in
the very sight of the supply. Primarily this is because the rules of the
exchange of mankind’s goods have failed, through their own stubbornness and
their own incompetence, have admitted their failure, and abdicated. Practices of
the unscrupulous money changers stand indicted in the court of public opinion,
rejected by the hearts and minds of men.

"….Faced by failure of credit they have proposed only the lending of more
money. Stripped of the lure of profit by which to induce our people to follow
their false leadership, they have resorted to exhortations, pleading tearfully
for restored confidence. They know only the rules of a generation of
self-seekers. They have no vision, and when there is no vision the people
perish.

"The money changers have fled from their high seats in the temple of our
civilization. We may now restore that temple to the ancient truths. The measure
of the restoration lies in the extent to which we apply social values more noble
than mere monetary profit."
