Almost Six Years and Counting

Published by marco on

On the subject of the suspiciously quiet home front in the war on terror, there’s Things I Used to Know by Scott Adams (Dilbert Blog):

“We Americans know that Al Qaeda has cells in America planning to attack. And we know that there are more terrorists than ever, thanks to the Iraq war. It’s easy to get people and explosives into the country on private boats or across our porous borders. The woods must be full of terrorists by now. Apparently all the slow ones came to America. I mean, Iraq has almost as many car bombs as cars. Those guys are industrious. But the American terrorists couldn’t put together one car bomb in six years. I know, I know – every one of those American terror cells is waiting for a nuke so they can do something more fabulous than last time. Apparently no one told Al Qaeda in Iraq what an excellent strategy it is to do nothing for six years.”

While on the subject of laziness, there’s also the American police force, who aren’t in any way measuring up to their brethren across the pond, who’ve at least managed to drum up a plan or two over the last couple of years, if not an actual threat. Though the so-called terrorists who the bobbies managed to drag down to Scotland Yard are just as dumb (read: inneffective) as their American counterparts, they at least have gone to the trouble of putting a propane tank wrapped in nails in their car’s back seats. All American cops have to show is some testimony from clearly disturbed individuals about damaging far-off things in some significant way. Not much of a coup compared to shutting down Heathrow a couple of times and bringing the western world to a near-standstill for at least a couple of hours. It’s almost like nobody’s putting an effort into maintaining this war on terror. C’mon people, let’s get some panties in a bunch before we all forget that we’re at war.
