Barefoot and Pregnant

Bush Vs. World On Int’l Treaty On Women’s Rights on Plastic covers a Washington Post article, Senate Panel to Defy Bush, Vote on Women’s Treaty.

“Bush doesn’t really stand alone in his opposition … even though his own State Department supports this treaty. He also has the company of “Afghanistan, Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar”; and domestic allies including Attorney General John Ashcroft, Janice Crouse of Concerned Women for America, the Heritage Foundation, The Family Research Counsel and the Traditional Values Coalition.”

With that kind of company, someone on Plastic kindly dug out the statement most likely being objected to: “Access to specific educational information to help to ensure the health and well-being of families, including information and advice on family planning.” Oh, I see. So, this part of the treaty, “States Parties shall take all appropriate measures, including legislation, to suppress all forms of traffic in women and exploitation of prostitution of women.” isn’t getting signed by the U.S. because its a backwards, puritan, super-religious nation run by zealots who still oppose women’s right to choose abortion for themselves. And they oppose it so vehemently that they don’t even want women to learn about it because apparently abortions are like drugs, they’re so inherently seductive and enticing that once a woman learns about it, she’ll get pregnant just to have one.

This is a great comment to the general situation epitomized by this issue, i’m going to crack. It includes these gems:

“BUSH, YOU STUPID, SICKENING MOTHERFUCKER! I’M SO GODDAMN TIRED OF YOU PERFORMING FUCKING ROLLBACK OPERATIONS AGIANST EVERY FUCKING IMAGINABLE FORM OF SOCIAL AND INTERNATIONAL PROGRESS! I’M SO FUCKING SICK OF YOUR SINGLE-HANDED DETERMINATION TO BRING INTERNATIONAL NORMS OF BEHAVIOR BACK TO THE FUCKING 18'TH CENTURY! … He also has the company of “Afghanistan, Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Quatar”; … God, it’s humiliating.”

Pretty crude, but succinct and gets the mood just right. So, if the administration takes its customary line, then any Senator voting for the International Treaty on Women’s Rights will labelled as unpatriotic, right?
