Chewy Cocoa Brownies

From the kitchen of Nestle Toll House Best-Loved Cookies Cookbook.

Ingredients

  • 1 2/3 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup butter or margarine, melted
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup baking cocoa
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • sifted powdered sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 Celcius).
  2. Stir together granulated sugar, butter and water in a large bowl.
  3. Stir in eggs and vanilla.
  4. Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt in medium bowl; stir into sugar mixture.
  5. Stir in nuts.
  6. Spread into greased 13 × 9-inch baking pan.
  7. Bake for 18 to 25 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out slightly sticky.
  8. Cool completely in pan on wire rack.
  9. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
  10. Cut into bars. (Makes 2 dozen brownies.)
